Are you unhappy with your microblading results? Whether the color faded incorrectly, the shape isn’t right, or you simply want a change, microblading removal is possible. This comprehensive guide covers 7 removal methods, costs, timelines, and what actually works. Quick Answer: Laser tattoo removal is the fastest and safest method to remove microblading, typically requiring 5-10 sessions over 8-20 months. At-home methods like creams and oils are extremely unsafe, and may cause scarring. Like most beauty trends, eyebrows have been in and out of fashion. From 90’s pencil brows to the fluffy soap brows of 2021, the eyebrows have seen a lot of aesthetic changes over the years. In 2018, there was an increase in cosmetic eyebrow tattoos, better known as microblading. Over time, cosmetic tattoo ink should fade, returning the area to its natural appearance. However, the ink does not always fade–or it turns an entirely different color than what was originally applied. Similar to regular tattoos, some people just don’t want cosmetic eyebrow tattoos anymore and want them removed. This is where microblading tattoo removal comes in. There are a few ways to remove microblading tattoos, but only a few are actually safe and effective.

How Does Microblading Work?

Microblading is a form of semi-permanent tattooing using cosmetic ink pigments. A microblading artist uses a fine blade (resembling an x-acto knife) to manually create hair-like strokes in the eyebrow area. Like traditional tattooing, the pigment is deposited into the second layer of the skin, which is why microblading doesn’t always fade as promised. The procedure creates individual strokes that mimic natural eyebrow hairs. Microbladed eyebrows can be customized in color, shape, and thickness. While marketed as “semi-permanent,” the pigment often lasts longer than expected or fades to unexpected colors (commonly gray, blue, or red).

What is Microblading Removal?

When it comes to removing microblading tattoos, the process is similar to removing a regular tattoo. You’ll come in every 6-8 weeks for a session to gradually fade the tattoo over time. There are many reasons why someone would opt into removing their microblading tattoos: the color has changed, the ink is not fading as expected, or a person simply doesn’t like them anymore.

Fading Microblading vs. Microblading Removal

Fading a microblading tattoo is slightly different than complete removal. Cosmetic fading. It often results in fewer laser sessions, and usually only a small part of the tattoo is being faded–rather than the whole thing.  Laser tattoo removal is the safest way to fade a microblading tattoo. However, there are some exfoliation methods that can potentially work such as rosehip seed oil and saline.

7 Ways to Remove Microblading

There are several ways you can remove a tattoo, but not all of them are recommended. You should always be mindful of every single method and their potential risks before starting any removal process.

1. Go Against Recommended Aftercare

Much like getting a regular tattoo, aftercare protocols are important to follow in order to ensure the area heals properly. Avoiding the recommended aftercare could result in faded or patchy microbladed eyebrows. This can also result in infection or scarring.

2. Be Patient

Typically, cosmetic ink only lasts for 6-24 months. If you have the time and patience, you could wait until the ink naturally fades to save some money and discomfort. Obviously, this method has some downsides including having to keep eyebrows you no longer want, and risking the ink taking more than 24 months to fade.

3. At-Home DIY

The internet might suggest at-home salt and lemon scrubs or saline microblading, but these methods can result in permanent skin damage. Tattoo ink resides in the dermis, which is the second layer of skin. Reaching this tattoo ink would require you to break the skin above the tattoo and will ultimately result in scar tissue development rather than removing the tattoo ink.

Rosehip Seed Oil

You might see people recommend rosehip seed oil for at-home microblade removal. However, this is not a reliable method and does not actually work to erase tattoo ink in your skin. At best, the rosehip seed oil will aid in eyebrow hair growth and moisturizing the skin.

 Exfoliation

Exfoliation is great for removing dead skin cells and encouraging circulation, but over-exfoliating can damage the skin barrier and cause scar tissue to develop. You should never use exfoliation as a way to remove a tattoo because it will not penetrate the dermis effectively.

Tattoo Removal Creams

Tattoo removal creams are not recommended for microblading removal because they can cause permanent damage to your skin. Read more about tattoo removal creams and how they work in this article.

4. Get Assistance From an Aesthetician

Aestheticians specialize in a variety of cosmetic procedures such as microblading, skin peeling, facials, microblading removal, and more. If you’re seeking an aesthetician for removal options, it’s important to make sure the person is reliable and licensed in removal. A good aesthetician willould have a proven track record of their client’s successful removals, along with reviews and before and after images.

5. Let a Microblading Technician Help

Instead of opting for removal, you could revisit a microblading technician to fix your cosmetic tattoo. However, they might recommend removal if it’s necessary to solve the problem. Some microblading technicians might offer removal options for their clients, but the methods could be potentially more harmful depending on what they are. If you opt into removal with a microblading technician, ensure they have the proper method available and are licensed to operate the machinery.

6. Saline Microblading Removal

Removing microblading with saline can remove tattoo ink; however, it is a very risky method of removal. This method involves injecting saline into the skin with the same microblading tool to remove your tattoo. While it may theoretically remove the pigment, it can damage the skin and cause permanent discoloration. Med-spas often opt into saline removal because it’s easy and does not require technical skill to complete. Saline removal will involve multiple sessions, each posing a high risk of skin damage.

7. Laser Microblading Removal

microblading tattoo removal before and after Laser tattoo removal works involves breaking ink particles down with a laser so the body can remove them gradually. With time and continued sessions, the laser will break down the ink layer by layer until it’s fully removed.  Much like typical tattoo removal, microblading removal depends heavily on the ink and depth of it. Microblading removal typically takes between 5-10 sessions, spaced out 6-8 weeks apart. In total, you’re looking at an 8-20 month process to remove microblading. Choosing laser tattoo removal is the best option because it’s safe, FDA-approved, and non-invasive.Your skin health will be preserved throughout the entire process, and risks are extremely limited.

Microblading Removal FAQs

What is the fastest way to remove microblading?

Laser tattoo removal is the fastest and safest way to remove microblading tattoos, typically requiring 5-10 sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart. We recommend the Candela PicoWay laser which is FDA certified and noninvasive. This laser will provide the best results with minimal (or no) cosmetic ink remaining.

How do you remove microblading eyebrows at home?

To put it simply, you can’t. At-home microblading removal methods include oils, exfoliants, and creams–but these methods pose a variety of risks like scarring and permanent discoloration.

Does microblading ever completely go away?

Cosmetic tattoo ink does not contain heavy metals and/or components that are meant to last a lifetime like regular tattoos. Microblading should fade away naturally in most cases, but a laser can speed up that process if desired.

How long does microblading removal take?

Complete microblading removal typically takes 8-20 months with laser treatments. You’ll need  5-10 sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart. This timeline depends heavily on ink color, density, and how deep the pigment was placed. Black and brown pigments remove fastest, while red and yellow may require additional sessions.
