Tattoo Removal
If you have a very large tattoo that you’d like to have removed, you probably have a lot of questions—like whether removal is even possible. Fortunately, laser tattoo removal can remove a tattoo of any size. Removery’s laser specialists can handle any type of tattoo, no matter how large or where it’s located on your body.
A tattoo above 35 square inches—about the size of a postcard—qualifies as large. Multiplying the height by the width will tell you the size of your tattoo in square inches.
The cost of tattoo removal is determined by the number of sessions needed, which depends on the size. Larger tattoos tend to require more sessions than smaller ones. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the average cost of a laser tattoo removal session is $463.
The specific cost to have a large tattoo removed will depend on several factors:
An older tattoo typically takes fewer sessions to remove than a newer one, as the ink has already faded. Lighter colors like lime green and turquoise can take longer to remove than others, too. Further, certain parts of the body, such as the torso, receive more blood flow, which speeds up removal in those areas. The type of laser used also affects the number of sessions needed. The state-of-the-art Picoway laser, which can handle the wavelengths required to reduce every color, will expedite the process as much as possible. That’s the method we use at Removery.

The tattoo removal process can feel uncomfortable during the session and for a short time afterward, but most people do not experience extreme discomfort. Removal feels more like being snapped with a rubber band.
A laser removal session takes slightly longer with a large tattoo, so you could experience that discomfort for a few more minutes. However, that doesn’t mean it feels more intense. The method used is no different.
Afterward, you may feel like you have a sunburn for a few hours. That could feel slightly more uncomfortable on a larger area of skin than a smaller section. Take extra care to wear loose clothing that won’t rub against that area.
Tattoo removal doesn’t happen all at once. It requires multiple sessions which must be spaced at least six weeks apart. During each session, the tattoo is faded more.
Scarring from tattoo removal is a thing of the past. It is no more likely to occur when removing a large tattoo than a small one, as long as you follow the aftercare instructions.
The noninvasive Picoway laser does not cause scarring because this technology has an extremely short pulse duration. That means the energy pulses generated by the laser are in the skin for an incredibly minute period of time. As a result, the thermal impact is minuscule.
Regardless of the size, following the simple guidelines provided by your laser technician will ensure the best results. Going out in the sun while your skin is healing can cause damage, which could pose more of a challenge with a larger area of skin in a prominent place—but that’s an easily avoidable issue.
You can remove as much or as little of the tattoo as you like. You can remove a segment of it or have a complete cover up done over part of the design—the choice is entirely yours. most tattoo artists chose Laser Tattoo Removal as the preferred method for cover up fading.
For large tattoos, removal generally takes 5 to 10 minutes. In comparison, smaller tattoos usually take just a minute or two per session.
The number of sessions required will vary depending on all of the reasons described above. However, completely removing a large tattoo will normally take 8-12 sessions, averaging around ten. If you want partial fading instead, fewer sessions will likely be required.
The process can take from around a year and two months to two years, depending on the total number of sessions needed. Whether you visit a doctor’s office, a dermatologist, or a laser removal specialist, sessions must be spaced at least six weeks apart. The total length of time will depend on how close together you schedule your sessions, which will be influenced by your healing speed. Some clients opt to space sessions eight weeks apart to promote optimal healing.
You can speed up the removal of a large tattoo by hydrating and exercising regularly, avoiding alcohol and smoking, and taking vitamins that promote skin and body health.
