A wrist tattoo, applied with a guitar string attached to the motor of a Walkman to spell the word “mob.” Then, another tattoo reading “Stink” on his arm, a nickname Terrence went by as a teenager. These tattoos once played a pivotal role in his survival behind bars; but now, his ink reminds him of the anguish he felt throughout those years.
On World Tattoo Removal Day in 2019, Terrence began his tattoo removal journey through Removery’s INK-nitiative program. The program provides tattoo removal services to individuals who are rebuilding their lives after a troubled past, including those who are previously incarcerated.
“By removing the physical scars of my past, I have a clean slate to embark upon the next chapter of my life and career. [I’m] now working to reform the criminal justice system, and I am forever grateful,” Terrence states.
Today, Terrence is helping others who have been wrongfully convicted and contesting police misconduct through The Terrence Lewis Liberation Foundation.
Terrence has also consulted legislators to provide resources for wrongfully convicted individuals, specifically immediate expungement and compensation. In Pennsylvania, his home state, there are no reentry programs or support for exonerated people. Many previously incarcerated individuals deal with PTSD and anxiety following their release, especially being in crowds.
With his legal knowledge, Terrence has also filed a lawsuit against the city of Philadelphia for egregious misconduct in the investigation of his case. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, the prosecution intentionally suppressed evidence that could have cleared his name prior to conviction.
