As a teenager, Evelyn fell heavily into the realm of body art—a common tale for many teens in the world. For many years, Evelyn dreamed about adding a specific tattoo to her growing collection: a self-portrait. At 18 years old, she made it a reality with a full-scale back piece directly underneath the tattoo of her street name. “[It’s] a dreadful tattoo,” she laughs, “I’m almost 40 with this big tattoo on my back.”
Eventually, Evelyn left her previous life behind to start anew, causing her to grow severely uncomfortable with her tattoo choices as a young adult. Her ink no longer represented who she was or how she wanted people to see her.
“People stare…it’s very uncomfortable, especially in the summertime,” she says. Evelyn would try to cover her tattoos when she went out in public, but it wasn’t realistic long term. She wanted them gone forever, and the opportunity to truly be freed from her past. “They were not the person I was anymore…I had to get rid of them,” she explains, “my husband works for [the] Boston police, so I can’t have these gang-related tattoos.”
