“When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a flight attendant. That was my dream job.”
Ab Flores would watch flight attendants on the plane while traveling to Mexico with her family, daydreaming of a future career in the sky. After years in constant awe of the profession, she swiftly achieved that dream in adulthood.
At 18 years old, Ab didn’t consider her future career before getting a tattoo – an incredibly common experience for many. A friend did the tattoo for $40, and she was permanently marked with an “ugly dandelion” on her forearm.
The tattoo was a great idea at the time, but Ab’s forearm ink jeopardized her dreams of becoming a flight attendant.
The industry has very strict tattoo policies, with most airlines outright banning the presence of tattoos while in uniform. It is a huge compliance issue due to flight attendants serving as the face of an airline’s brand. Appearance is critical, especially when it comes to body modifications.
When Ab attended the International Air and Hospitality Academy in Vancouver, WA, they emphasized the forbidden nature of visible tattoos on flight attendants. They threatened to send students home if their tattoos were visible, and enforced the policy whenever needed.
Throughout her career, Ab got used to hiding her tattoo from coworkers and passengers alike; but temporary cover-ups did not provide a lot of comfort.
“If the CEO of our company comes on, and I have my tattoo visible, I’m gonna get fired. There’s no sugarcoating it. You will be sent home.”
Ab could also be reported by passengers or fellow staff members if her tattoo is visible, which consistently added to her concerns.
To put it simply, Ab’s tattoo weakened her job security and caused constant worry every single shift. So, it had to be removed.
Today, she is a few sessions into her journey at Removery, and she’s incredibly excited to continue watching her tattoo fade.
