Working for Inked Magazine, Meghan Elizabeth has spent plenty of time around tattoos, including the ink on her own body.
But when she saw Removery at a tattoo convention, she immediately felt connected to the idea of removing some of her tattoos. “I was [working a convention], and [Removery] was there,” she shares. “I was like ‘I really want this service. I have [tattoos] on my body that I don’t want.’”
Since beginning her tattoo removal journey, Removery has helped Meghan almost fully remove nearly five tattoos on areas such as her knuckles and ribcage.
At this year’s Chicago Tattoo Arts Convention, we sat down with Meghan to discuss her tattoo removal journey and how Removery made every step of the process perfect.
First impressions are everything, especially when it comes to laser tattoo removal. You want a company that has high-quality technology, knowledgeable staff, and the ability to provide you with great results. With just one consultation, Meghan was confident Removery had exactly what she was looking for.
The studio’s environment was peaceful and welcoming, the complete opposite of what she had expected from a tattoo-related space.
“Everything is just calm,” she says. “Any time that I’ve walked into [Removery], there’s no chaotic feeling.”
For Meghan, those smaller details mattered. She appreciated the ability to sit down and get comfortable before starting every treatment. There was time to prepare the skin with ice, ask questions, and complete the treatment at her own pace.
“The communication is really, really open. You tell the [laser specialist] if you need to stop and they will.”
Being able to take breaks really made Meghan feel human throughout the process, rather than someone sitting through a procedure. It was a personalized experience, crafted around her tattoos and her needs.
“I feel like taken care of when I go,” she says. “I’m not a number or a dollar sign. You’ve got to go to Removery. That’s it. There’s nobody else.”
Many people wonder what laser tattoo removal treatments feel like and, specifically, how much they hurt. Meghan was no exception to this curiosity, but her experience proved that the process is truly unique for everyone.
Her peers often compared the sensation to being snapped with a rubber band, but Meghan felt the discomfort resembled another familiar feeling.
“It’s a spicy tattoo. If you’ve had a tattoo, you know what it feels like. [Tattoo removal] is just way spicier.”
While laser tattoo removal can be uncomfortable, Removery provides pain management tools to help clients remain comfortable during treatment. Ice packs, specifically, remain Meghan’s favorite way to alleviate discomfort during laser treatments. “You get some ice, and you get to be a little numb, so there’s that. Everyone really takes care of you.”
Laser tattoo removal isn’t a one-and-done situation. The entire process takes time, combining laser technology with your body’s natural processes to gradually remove a tattoo. The rate of removal depends heavily on the tattoo itself, but most clients experience substantial fading in just three to five sessions at Removery.
The gradual fading has become incredibly satisfying and rewarding for Meghan. The lettering on her knuckles is starting to fade, and her ex’s name on her ribcage is now barely visible.
With every session, the tattoos she has had for years are becoming more difficult to see.
“Watching [my tattoos] fade is the biggest thing,” she says. “It’s super cathartic for me.”
Everyone has a different reason for starting the tattoo removal process. Some people want to distance themselves from their past, whether it involves an old relationship or an impulsive decision. Others have simply changed their minds about their personal style, and their tattoos no longer reflect that change.
In Meghan’s case, tattoo removal was necessary for nearly every possible reason, but the ability to control what is on her body was the most important aspect for her. With tattoo removal, she has the opportunity to change her once-permanent decisions to ensure her skin matches the person she is today. “I decided I really don’t want my fingers or knuckles tattooed, at least not right now,” Meghan says. “Maybe later in life; I don’t know.”
Regardless of Meghan’s future tattoo plans, she knows laser tattoo removal is always there to help her remove any tattoos that she outgrows.
