From struggling with gender dysphoria as a child to transitioning into the woman she wants to be, Removery has the privilege of helping Farrah feel fully present with who she is today by removing her face tattoo.
Farrah Flawless has many body modifications including tattooed eyes, nose gauges, facial piercings, and face tattoos. “If you can think of a body modification, I’ve probably had it done,” she tells Removery.
As a piercer and body mod artist herself, she has explored many different forms of self-expression and helped others to do the same. The tattoo and body modification community felt like home, something many people can relate to.
Over the years, Farrah added to her body modification collection regularly, and eventually, she tattooed the middle of her face with solid black ink.
“When I first was getting the heavier black in the middle of my face, that was definitely when I was headed down a darker path. I have a lot of gender dysphoria and facial dysmorphia. It was sort of my way of wearing a mask,” says Farrah.
By covering one’s face, the ambiguity allows for an alternative outlook or feeling of freedom. Freelance journalist, Asmae Fahmy, discussed the connection between facial coverings, body dysmorphia, and gender dysphoria in an article from Very Well Health. “Patients with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) related to their faces are finding that face masks ease their symptoms. By neutralizing their environments, face masks allow BDD patients to abandon compulsive coping habits.”
Throughout these last few years, Farrah has developed new coping strategies and grown significantly as an individual. She is now removing her face tattoo to start her next chapter, free from negative reminders of the past.
Transitioning helped Farrah become the person she truly sees herself as. “I almost always knew I was Farrah,” she says. “It was the 80s and 90s in Indiana, [so] there weren’t a lot of resources to help me at the time.”
Now, removing her face tattoo is just another step Farrah is taking to feel more authentic.
“It’s definitely made me start falling back in love with my face again. No I’m not done yet, and there is a lot more for me to do. But the fact that it’s fading before my eyes gives me more and more confidence about that face every day. One life to live, with different faces along the way.”
Farrah’s tattoo removal journey is stopping at her blackout face ink. Farrah plans on keeping the rest of her tattoos, especially the ink on her eyes, forehead, chest, and head.
